Questions

When can I call?

Any hour. An automated assistant takes your details, and you’ll hear back from a gutter contractor who serves Detroit or from us.

Do gutters need a permit in Detroit?

The city's permit pages do not say, for gutters on their own. The city's own instruction is to check its permits page, or to let the contractor handle the permitting, and the buildings desk is 313-224-3202 (the city's page).

Will gutter guards stop ice dams?

The state's extension service says ice dams come from attic heat at the eaves. It says nothing about gutters — new gutters and guards will not stop one (the extension article).

How often should gutters be cleaned?

The city says to clean them at least twice a year, more often if there are trees over the roof. It also says to check that they are pitched toward the downspouts and that each elbow funnels into the one below it (the city's drainage guide). Fall gutter and leaf cleanup

Where is the downspout supposed to end?

Onto grass, at least five feet from the house, never onto the driveway (the city's guide). A city program and a state standard say three feet (the program · the standard). Ask for five.

Does a gutter contractor have to be licensed?

Michigan lists gutters as its own trade, and any job totaling $600 or more in labor and materials must be done by a contractor licensed by the state (what the state tells homeowners). Ask to see the pocket card, and check any license yourself at the state license lookup.

Will I be charged for the visit?

Calling us costs nothing. Some contractors charge to come out and get on the roof. Ask before they come, and get the price in writing.
