The two Metro Detroit figures are for the same upgrade on the same kind of house, published months apart, and one is five times the other. That is not a rounding difference — it is two different products being sold under one word. Screens and vinyl inserts sit at the low end; micro-mesh and branded reverse-curve systems at the high end.

What a guard is competing against

Cleaning. The city's own maintenance guide tells Detroit homeowners to clean gutters at least twice per year, more often if there are overhanging trees, and in the same breath to check the pitch, caulk leaks and holes, and clear every downspout elbow (the city's drainage guide (PDF)).

So the honest way to read a guard quote is as the cost of buying out some of that work, on a house you already know the tree cover of. At +$1 – $3 per foot it is a small bet against two cleanings a year. At +$8 – $15 per foot it is $1,200 – $2,250 on 150 feet of gutter, and it deserves the product's own name, its warranty and its rate per foot written down.

No guard removes the pitch, the caulk or the elbows from that list. Those stay whoever's job they were before.

Michigan's own standard says five words about guards.

In its written specification for gutter work, the state allows them and says nothing more: “Leaf guards may be installed.” the state's rehabilitation standard

Anything else a salesperson tells you about guards is the salesperson's, not the state's. Get the claim in writing.

The thing guards do not fix

Michigan State's extension service says ice dams form when attic heat warms the roof and melts snow that refreezes at the eaves, and that the underlying problem is undesirable attic heat — generally too little insulation or too little ventilation in the attic (the extension article).

Its article does not mention gutters once. New gutters and guards will not stop an ice dam, and a guard sold as a cure for ice dams is being sold on a claim its own state extension service does not make. What the state and the city do say about ice dams

Questions

Checked October 10, 2026

Which guard should I buy?

We have no test to cite, and we do not sell one, so we will not pick. Ask for the product's own name and warranty in writing and check the two rates per foot above against the quote.

Will guards stop ice dams?

The state's extension service says ice dams come from attic heat at the eaves. It says nothing about gutters — new gutters and guards will not stop one (the extension article).

Do guards mean I never clean the gutters again?

The city's advice is twice a year, more with trees overhead, and it covers the pitch, the caulking and the downspout elbows as well as the debris (the city's drainage guide). A guard addresses the debris and none of the rest. What a fall cleanout covers

Why is one quote five times the other?

Because “gutter guard” covers a screen that clips in and a branded reverse-curve system equally well. Compare the rate per foot and the product name, not the word.
