Your roof is already on your water bill.

Detroit charges for drainage by hard surface, and every home gets an automatic 25% credit that assumes the downspouts already run onto the lawn. the drainage charge · the city's downspout guide

Go and look at where your downspouts end. The credit on your bill assumes work somebody has already done.

How a gutter job is priced

By the foot, then by the extras. Measure the runs along the eaves, multiply by the rate, and add the downspouts. Three Metro Detroit contractors posted $6 – $12 per foot installed in 2026 (Smart Roof, Warren, July 2026 · NEXT Exteriors, Mount Clemens, February 2026 · Guthix Roofing, Wyandotte, July 2026), so 150 feet comes to $900 – $1,800 before the downspouts.

That is why the totals those same three publish land where they do: one puts a complete replacement on a typical house at $900 – $2,400, and the other two span $900 – $2,600 between a ranch and a colonial. A national guide runs wider still, $5 – $17 per foot, because it is pricing the whole country (HomeGuide).

Nothing here is a quote, and no number on this page came from us. A contractor has to see the fascia, count the inside and outside corners, and decide whether five-inch or six-inch gutter is right for the roof before any of it means anything.

The four scopes

Different jobs, different arithmetic. The spread inside a scope matters more than the midpoint.

1 — Seamless aluminum replacement

Five-inch K-style is the standard on most Metro Detroit houses (Guthix Roofing, July 2026). $6 – $12 per foot installed; $900 – $2,400 for a complete replacement with one of the three contractors, $900 – $2,600 across the other two.

Going to six-inch adds $3 – $5 per foot (national customer survey). Sizes, materials and hangers

2 — Gutter guards

Never one number. The two Metro Detroit contractors disagree by five times on the same upgrade: +$1 – $3 per foot (Smart Roof) against +$8 – $15 per foot (NEXT Exteriors).

A national survey puts guards at $6 – $13 per foot including material and labor (Angi). Screens and vinyl are the low end; micro-mesh and branded reverse-curve systems the high end. What you are actually buying

3 — Repair, reseal, re-hang

Priced per item by a Metro Detroit contractor in July 2026: reseal a leaking joint or seam $75 – $150 a section, re-hang sagging gutters $100 – $200, replace a damaged section $150 – $400, repair or reattach a downspout $75 – $200 (Smart Roof).

A national guide prices whole repairs at $100 – $450, and resealing at $1.50 – $6.50 per foot (HomeGuide).

4 — Downspouts, extensions and burying

An extension above ground $5 – $20; a new downspout $30 – $75, or $220 – $625 for four or five; burying one $150 – $350 with the run capped at ten feet. That price includes the extension, the trench, a catch basin, drainpipe and a bubbler (HomeGuide).

A Metro Detroit contractor posts $150 – $400 per downspout buried, with no length stated (NEXT Exteriors); a national survey puts a full underground drainage system at $2,200 – $3,300 (Angi). Check the unit as well as the number: they are not the same job.

Disconnecting a downspout from the sewer is not a job we pass on, and it is the one scope with no published price at all: the city says the cost “is dependent on existing site conditions, piping materials, and size of property and therefore will vary by site,” and states none (the city's drainage guide).

These are the city's building permit fee lines, and they apply if a permit is required. The city's permit pages do not say whether gutter work alone needs one, and its fee schedule has no gutter, downspout, roofing or siding line. The city's own instruction is to check its permits page to find out, and that a contractor will typically handle the permitting for you; the buildings desk is 313-224-3202 (what the city says · the fee schedule (PDF)). Replacing or recovering a roof is different: that one does require a permit (the city's roof requirements (PDF)). Permits and licenses for gutter work

What moves the price

  • Feet, corners and stories. Two stories means staging or ladders on every run, and every inside and outside corner is a miter somebody has to cut and seal.
  • The wood behind the gutter. Rotted fascia has to be replaced before anything hangs off it — the state's own rehabilitation standard treats roof, soffit, fascia and gutters as one scope and allows no partial replacements (the standard (PDF)).
  • Five-inch or six. Six-inch carries more water off a big roof and costs $3 – $5 more per foot (customer survey).
  • What happens at the bottom. An extension is $5 – $20; burying the same downspout is $150 – $350 for a ten-foot run (national ranges). Where the city says the water has to go
